If you're visiting Oundle School for an Open Day, Speech Day, or the start of a new term, you'll quickly discover that accommodation in the town fills up fast. The school draws families from across the UK and internationally, and the town's hotel options are limited. This guide covers everything you need to know about staying in Oundle as a visiting parent.
Plan around the school calendar
Open Days run termly on Saturdays, typically in September, February and May. Speech Day falls in late June. The beginning and end of each term, Michaelmas (September), Lent (January) and Trinity (April), all bring a surge of parents to town. These dates are the ones to book around, and they fill up quickly.
Stay in the centre, not outside it
Most accommodation options near Oundle are in the surrounding villages, pleasant enough, but you'll need a car for everything and you won't experience the town itself. Oundle is compact and beautiful, and the best way to visit is to be in the middle of it. From One Market Place, the school's main entrance is a five-minute walk. The town's restaurants, coffee shops and market are on your doorstep.
Self-catering makes sense for school visits
If you're spending a full weekend in Oundle, arriving Saturday for an Open Day and exploring on Sunday, a self-catering apartment gives you considerably more flexibility than a hotel room. Cook a proper breakfast before the visit, use the apartment as a base between events, have dinner in the town without a checkout time looming. Our apartments sleep four, so two parents and a prospective student fit comfortably.
What to do with the rest of your weekend
Most families visiting Oundle School discover the town itself is a genuine bonus. The Thursday market, the riverside walks to Barnwell, the Talbot Hotel for dinner, the independent shops on West Street. There's a full weekend here if you want it. Several families tell us their children's interest in Oundle School increases significantly after spending time in the town itself.
Book early
For Speech Day weekend and the September term start in particular, accommodation in central Oundle books out months in advance. If you have an Open Day confirmed, we'd recommend securing your apartment the same day.
